  Alpacas Newsletter Christmas 2009

Hello to fellow alpaca owners, and people interested in alpacas who we have met at recent shows and events.

Summer is always busy on farm and we are enjoying our young alpaca cria gambolling in the paddocks.  95% of births are normal and uneventful and the dam knows what to do to birth and feed her cria. Here are some hints to increase the success of your birthing season.

Preparation for birthing and feeding cria

If you have pregnant dams, you should have a cria birthing kit made up - gloves, water-based antiseptic lubrication, iodine for putting on the umbilical cord, old towel, cria coat, as a minimum - in a handy "grab and go" container.

We have a 20 kg bag of Anlamb opened and it is more than we will need for the season. If you want some, let us know and come along with an airtight container to fill for your cria feeding kit. Remember a lamb's teat will screw on most plastic screw-topped bottles, including water sipper bottles.

If your cria does not get colostrum from its dam, then you will need to have a substitute like cow's colostrum or artificial colostrum like ColoZen on hand. You must feed it to the cria within the first 24 hours of its life.

Studs

Our Stud Booklet for 2009-2010 is out and each stud has his own webpage.

It features Aquaviva Titus on the front cover with some of his show ribbons. Since this photo was taken he has also won Supreme Champion at Upper Clutha Show in Wanaka 2009 and Supreme Champion at South Otago Show in Balclutha 2009, which he also won in 2008.

We also won Best Black at South Otago, as we did last year, but with a different alpaca. This year it went to NZ Southern Black Adder, who is presently on stud duties in Otago/Southland.

Shearing Season

We are buying raw alpaca fleeces in black and grey. They must be at least 3 inches long - preferably 75mm to 100mm. They must be clean, with no guard hair, short pieces, or bits of vegetation in them. Let us know if you will have any available - we need them in early January.

Our fleece cleaning wands have been re-packaged and priced. The straight wand is being phased out and the single wavy wand is now priced at $30 - or $55 if you buy two wavy wands. A wand is fantastic to get fleece cleaner before you shear. They are on our webshop.

Alpacas for Sale

We are reducing the numbers of alpacas on our farm to a more manageable level. Some of the cria recently born will be available with their dam as 3-in-1 packages, and the dams will be pregnant again. We will have more, as we are birthing through to the end of March.

We have good quality breeding alpacas and cheap packages on our website, but there are more available.  Please ask and we can send you indivdual sheets for each alpaca.

You are welcome to visit and view - we are here all summer, as Linda recuperates from major surgery.
