March 2004
Newsletter - Progeny Issue
Proven by their Progeny
We are really proud of what we have bred
here at Southern Alpacas Stud.
Our strong breeding programme is
evidenced by our run of winning Supreme
Champion Huacaya at every show on the
Royal Show travelling circuit since
alpacas have been shown - from 1997 to
2003.
Champions all, and NZ Southern bred.
NZ Southern Julius,
NZ Southern Capricorn,
NZ Southern Equinox
NZ Southern Tucson Gold
Click for details of champions.
These winning alpacas are all bred from
Southern Alpacas Stud
sires - MoonShine, Brutus and High South.
We'd
like to share with you a peek at the next generation - our new studs' progeny,
full of promise, covered in fine, dense, fibre, and already outstanding in their
field.

Irraquoy
stamps his Mark
Eringa Park Irraquoy is breeding alpaca cria who strongly resemble him. They are
proud and upstanding, and truly are like "chips off the old block". They have
tended to be on time or early, and come into the world strong, and fighting to
get on to their feet and get going.
Winner in Australia of broad ribbons
(championships)
in prestigious shows in Australia, Irraquoy was described by the judge at Royal
Adelaide Show 2002 as "an exceptionally fine male with superb crimp definition
and lustre".

Siring Coloured Cria
Last breeding season we departed from the tradition of using coloured sires over
coloured dams. Instead we opted to mate by fleece characteristics, regardless of
colour. And we have got what we hoped for - top quality coloured cria with
improved fleece, with the best of the white fibre characteristics, but in
colours !
ILR Alpine Fiber's Brutus, our American import,
sired by the legendary
Hemingway, is throwing coloured cria - even black - across coloured dams, as is Eringa Park
Saintly. Saintly was here on a stud tour from Australia, but has now been
purchased by a NZ consortium, so is now available to travel for stud duties
nationwide. His genetics are unique in New
Zealand, from Royal Fawn.
Take a look at their webpages.

Excellence year after
year
Benleigh Moon Shine's progeny
continue to take awards at the Shows
as they move up their age classes - like NZ Southern Tucson
Gold and NZ Southern Equinox, pictured, taking Intermediate Champion and
also Reserve Intermediate Champion at the Royal Show.
MoonShine's progeny continue to feature in the sire's progeny awards throughout
the country.
Have
a look at his on-line stud book, on www.alpacamales.com
which lists all his progeny and their awards.

Get these Genetics
|
You too can get these genetics, by using our stud boys. They have a
regular travel schedule around the country, so contact us to discuss
when our studs will be based in your region, for your girls. They
usually stay in an area for 4-6 weeks, and mate only one female a day,
so you get a better chance at a pregnancy.
Another way to get these genetics for
your own herd, is to buy a herdsire from our boys. We have boys ready to
work now, from the famous Purrembete bloodlines. It's a cost-effective
way of bringing in top Australasian genetics into your breeding
programme. Take a look at our herdsire page
You can obtain these genetics also
through the female side. A few Brutus girls are now for sale, and they
are looking wonderful, with great fleece. And some of MoonShine's
females are now producing their own cria.
We also select and import a few top
alpacas from Australia each year. We have, recently released from
quarantine, a select group of females, in whites and colours. They are
available for sale now they are pregnant to
our top studs.

Regional Support near YOU !
We are "Southern" in name and location only. Although we are based in the south,
we offer alpaca services nationwide, through the Alpaca Services network -
alpaca breeders working co-operatively together to provide alpaca sales,
services, studs, and support in a network that covers New Zealand.
The
network offers nationwide expertise. Many of
our studs are jointly owned with members of the Alpacas Services Network, so
they can offer a
truely regional service. And there are alpacas for
sale located all around the network - we have one
of the widest selections of alpacas for sale in NZ.
You can meet network members on the website
www.alpacaservices.co.nz

See what alpacas are
