  Summer Shows
The last show of the season before Christmas was a new judged show for alpacas - South Otago Show in Balclutha. It used to be our local A&P Show when we lived in Brighton Otago and we had been there many times before.

Nic attended with a small team of three males and they took 6 broad ribbons.

 champions at Balclutha

Aquaviva Titus won SUPREME CHAMPION HUACAYA. He was also
Champion Senior
and
Best Mid/Dark Fawn alpaca. (right)

NZ Southern Fleetfoot won his white/light fawn class, and went on to be second to Titus, as Reserve Champion Senior. Fleetfoot was Best White/Light Fawn alpaca. (left)

Closeburn Montezuma won his class and was Best Black Alpaca, winning a cup.

Saving Cria - Camelid Neo-Natal Workshop

Our Neo-Natal Workshops continue to be held around New Zealand. We aim to educate breeders and vets, and now vet students from Massey University are attending our workshops.

People will learn what is normal and what is not in birthing, and they will know what they can do and when they need a vet. In birthing 95% of births are normal, but this course should minimise distress  and save cria and dams.

    Next Scheduled Workshops are:

    Saturday 7th March in Christchurch
Sunday 8th March in Christchurch - advanced refresher
     for experienced breeders

Book in now with us - your investment of $100+gst is well worth it if you save a cria and her mum, with the knowledge and experience you gain on the course.

Patricia Alpacas for Sale

We always have alpacas for sale and our wide choice of females includes herd starters at the lower end of the price scale, to show quality girls.

If you are after alpacas with fine fibre, we have them. Our own bred alpacas, even our wethers, fall in the 16-18 micron range, with some far lower. The future lies in fine fibre for alpaca.

Seasonal Hints Summer 2009

·

Shearing time is upon us. Make sure your fleece is long enough, and that it is clean prior to shearing. The fleece cleaners are great - their electrostatic force flicks the debris out of the fleece on the alpaca. Take a mid side sample and get your microns tested. Weigh your total fleece weight, and then remember to fill in the AGE submission form to get started on breeding values for your alpacas.

We strongly encourage clients with offspring from our males to register them and their shear data with AGE. This helps us get our stud male breeding values more accurate, and give you better advice on who to use for which female.

We also recommend that older animals that do not grow enough length for decent use in a 12 month period, are shorn anyway. This for animal health reasons.

We are finding that modern day youngsters have fleece perfectly long enough to be shorn at 7 months, and are "over-fleeced" at 10 months. Consider shearing them young.  The second fleece will be far better for it.

Finally, on mating, remember that young females can likely be mated at 12 months of age. But this may not be the best for them.

If your female is smaller, or is not emotionally mature, or is resisting the male in the mating pen, then wait. You will get a far better productive life from her by waiting, than by forcing the mating.

For your mating programme, book in your favourite stud male early – otherwise you may find he is the other end of the country when you need him. Our Stud Booklet 2008-2009 is out and our Stud Location Guide on the website is regularly updated.
